Becoming an early adopter has some risks, but it also has huge benefits. In this presentation, I'll cover the benefits to you and your organization in becoming early adopters of Drupal 8, give you a brief overview of new key features along with the advantages they offer; I'll provide practical tips and show you some tools that will help you get up and running quickly with D8 (how to know if the contrib modules you need are ready, how to expedite your custom module porting & data migrations, etc.). There is no one size fits all answer, but I'll also cover some of the questions you should ask yourself and your team to help you evaluate if Drupal 8 is a great fit for your project, today. I'll help you find ways to derisk the process to help you get to that "yes" decision now - based on my experience at Examiner.com where we launched the first Drupal 7 site and the first top 100 website on Drupal six months before the official release of the D7 platform. Finally, if you decide you need to stick with Drupal 7 (which will be support and around for many years to come) or if you need to find ways to extend the life cycle of your current investment in Drupal 7, I'll briefly cover what has been back-ported and how you can take advantage of many D8 advancements in D7.

Drupal 8 is here and with it comes some new and exciting changes. The site building component in D8 is chock full of new features and a fresh new look. In this session we will explore some of what to expect when site building in Drupal 8 while getting hands on with stackstarter.io

Drupal and the New Front-end Workflow

With all of the advancements that we've seen in Drupal the connection between Drupal and a solid front-end development process is still an enigma. Drupal, for a multitude of different reasons, has been labeled as being not so nice to work with as a front-end developer. I'm here to tell you, that's simply not the case! Drupal gives you all of the tools that we need to translate your beautiful html designs into flexible, configurable layouts. We just need to change our front-end development workflow.

In this session we'll cover how to implement a style guide driven development workflow in Drupal, as well as some key modules that will help with the process.

We will also talk about how the ELMS Learning Network team has embraced this new methodology and how it's enabled us to rapidly implement and maintain polished design components over a distributed network of systems without going completely insane.

Speed is one feature many clients assume they will get but do not always ask for. In fact, you are more likely to hear your clients ask for features or functionality that will make the site slower. As the person or team developing the site you must often protect the speed of the site. This session will look at key areas in a site architecture where speed may suffer and how to structure your project to ensure they stay fast. Specifically:

Setting and tracking performance budgets so that everyone can see how speed is changing over the life of a project.
Analyzing the benefits of third-party integrations and ads that can kill front-end performance.
CSS and JS organizations and minification strategies that your team will use.
Identifying which places in a system can be cached aggressively.
Debugging problem code and queries.

Community Contributions to Boost Your Bottom Line

Everyone who uses open-source software (and understands where it comes from!) knows that they should contribute something back; it's the right thing to do. The various reasons so few people contribute are often valid: perceived high barrier to entry, my employer won't let me, I don't have the time, etc… Only a small percentage of folks realize that contributing isn't a purely altruistic activity. Contributing actually leads to personal gains in skills, finances, and connections - and the community is not only okay with that, it actually supports it. A new perspective on contributing can expand your client base and create new opportunities for you - and the community will benefit just as much.

This presentation will ask you to take a fresh look at how and why you can contribute to an open-source community. It will challenge the perception that you need to be an expert programmer or user, know a certain person, or work for a particular organization. More importantly, it will look at how you can benefit from contributing including learning and practicing new skills, increasing your income and greater opportunities for expanding your personal network.

Mike Anello will challenge you to take advantage of the huge opportunities that participating in an open-source community provide. Using real-world examples from open-source communities and for-profit companies, learn how by looking at contributions from a different angle, you can financially, mentally, and karmic-ly enrich yourself and/or your organization.
